Most people read Matthew 16:17–18 as if Yeshua were founding a new religion. But once you understand the purpose of YHVH revealed in Isaiah 14, the entire passage comes alive in its original meaning.
The Messiah wasn’t creating a “church.” He was restoring jurisdiction—the authority Adam forfeited, the authority Satan claimed, and the authority the Son of Man came to reclaim.
Understanding this purpose unlocks Matthew 16, Acts 26, and Colossians 1.

Isaiah 14 — The Backstory of Jurisdiction
Isaiah 14 describes a rebellious spiritual being who:
weakened the nations
ruled over them
held humanity in captivity
refused to release his prisoners
This is not mythic poetry. It is a jurisdictional statement.
Humanity was meant to rule the earth under YHVH’s authority. But through Adam’s failure, the dominion mandate was compromised, and a hostile power stepped into the vacuum.
Isaiah 14 reveals YHVH’s purpose:
To overthrow the illegitimate ruler and restore rightful authority to humanity.
This is the backdrop for everything Yeshua says in Matthew 16.
