⚖️ “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree” — Legal Doctrine
In U.S. law, this doctrine holds that if the source of evidence (the “tree”) is tainted, then anything derived from it (the “fruit”) is also tainted and inadmissible in court. It’s an extension of the exclusionary rule, designed to prevent law enforcement from benefiting from illegal actions.
This principle was established in Silverthorne Lumber Co. v. United States (1920) and later expanded in Wong Sun v. United States (1963).
