SUPERSESSIONISM

In this study, we will examine the key Church Fathers to demonstrate how they misread the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 A.D. as a divine sign that God had rejected the Jews and transferred covenant authority to the Church.

Holding “The Replacement Theology Paradigm” will cause any student to misinterpret hundreds of critically important passages. Supersessionism is the belief that “the Church” replaced Israel as God’s chosen people, and that is utterly false. The Jewish Messiah established the Daniel 2:44 “Kingdom of God” as seen in Acts 2:1-4 NOT “Christianity”.

We will begin this study with Doctor Martin Luther, the author of: “On The Jews and Their Lies” (Published in 1543 A. D.)

The book that starts this teaching! The result of the first Church Fathers detaching from “THE JEWISH SECT” that the Apostle Paul taught, can be clearly seen in this book and in WWII.

We are still hear after 2,000 YEARS of exile

Prophecy shows that YHVH has not ended His relationship with us:

“So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let My holy name be profaned anymore. Then the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.”

(Ezekiel 39:7)

Examples of the “Proof-Texts” used by Replacement Theologians

Ignatius of Antioch— Matthew 16:18 “You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church…”

Ignatius uses this verse to argue that every local assembly must have one bishop as the visible center of unity, just as Peter’s confession functioned as the foundation of the universal Church. He applies Matthew 16:18 to support hierarchical order and obedience to the bishop, treating the bishop as the earthly safeguard of unity in the same way Peter’s confession safeguarded the apostolic faith.

Origen — Matthew 21:43 “The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation bringing forth its fruits.”

Origen uses this verse as his clearest proof that God has removed covenant authority from ethnic Israel and transferred it to the Church. He argues that the “nation producing fruit” is the Christian community, not the Jewish people, and that this transfer fulfills God’s plan to replace Israel’s stewardship with a new, spiritually‑defined people who obey the teachings of Christ.

Tertullian — John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Tertullian uses John 1:1 to argue that the Logos has replaced Israel as the bearer of God’s revelation. He claims that since the Word existed before Israel and now speaks through the Church, the Scriptures and covenant authority have passed from the Jews to the Christian community. For Tertullian, John 1:1 proves that the Church—not Israel—is now the rightful interpreter and heir of God’s Word.

Augustine of Hippo — Romans 5:12

Augustine uses Romans 5:12 to argue that all humanity shares Adam’s guilt and therefore stands under condemnation apart from grace. From this, he concludes that Israel’s covenant standing has been nullified by universal sin and that only the Church, formed through Christ’s grace, now carries God’s covenant promises. For Augustine, Romans 5:12 proves that the old covenant people have been replaced by a new humanity defined not by descent but by participation in Christ.

FIVE VERSES THAT REFUTE REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY

1. Zechariah 12:2–3 — Jerusalem, the Cup of Trembling

“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about… And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people.”

This verse destroys Replacement Theology because:

  • God is still dealing with Jerusalem, not “the Church.”
  • The nations are gathered against Jerusalem, not “the Church.”
  • God defends Jerusalem, not “the Church.”
  • The prophecy is end‑time, not historical.
  • Jerusalem remains the center of God’s plan — not replaced, not abandoned, not transferred.

Replacement Theology cannot survive Zechariah 12.

2. Jeremiah 31:35–36 — Israel Cannot Cease to Be a Nation

“If these ordinances depart from before Me… then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before Me forever.” God ties Israel’s continued existence to the sun, moon, and stars. If Israel is gone, the universe collapses. Supersessionism contradicts God’s oath.

3. Romans 11:1 — “Has God Cast Away His People?”

“Has God cast away His people? God forbid.” Paul answers the Replacement‑Theology question directly: No. Absolutely not.

4. Romans 11:28–29 — Israel Still Beloved

“As touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes… the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.” Israel remains beloved, not replaced. God’s covenant with them is irrevocable.

5. Zechariah 2:8 — Israel Still the Apple of His Eye

“He who touches you touches the apple of His eye.” This is post‑exile, post‑judgment, post‑dispersion. Israel is still the center of God’s covenant affection.
